A serious border incident has been reported along the Arakan–Bangladesh frontier, where personnel from Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) allegedly crossed into Arakan territory and forcibly seized eight cattle belonging to Arakanese traders. The incident, which reportedly occurred near Border Pillar No. 50, has raised concerns among local residents and authorities over escalating cross-border violations.
According to field accounts, a group of five armed BGB members entered the area on November 27 and approached Arakanese traders who were preparing for a scheduled livestock trade with Bangladeshi buyers. Without providing any explanation or engaging in dialogue, the BGB personnel allegedly drove the cattle away toward the Bangladeshi side of the border.
Witnesses said the traders, taken by surprise and outnumbered by the armed unit, could not intervene. However, locals managed to capture video footage that shows the BGB personnel forcibly taking the cattle. The recordings have since been shared among Arakanese communities, fueling anger and frustration over repeated violations by Bangladeshi forces.
Residents along the border say this is not an isolated incident. Over recent months, several Arakanese traders have complained about hostile actions, intimidation, and arbitrary seizures by some BGB members. These incidents have disrupted cross-border economic activities, particularly livestock trading, which is a major livelihood for local communities.
Local sources further report that the intrusion took place clearly inside Arakan’s claimed territory, marking a breach of established border norms. For now, it remains unconfirmed whether the seizure was carried out under official BGB orders or if it was an unauthorized action by individual personnel acting on their own initiative.
Community leaders stress that such actions not only harm the economic stability of border residents but also threaten fragile relations between ethnic communities on both sides. They warn that continued violations could heighten tensions unless both sides take steps to prevent future incidents and ensure accountability.
Arakan authorities are reportedly reviewing the incident and considering official communication channels to seek clarification from the Bangladeshi side. Meanwhile, affected traders have urged stronger protection and monitoring along the border, saying they fear further losses if the current situation continues unchecked.
