Misrepresentation of Reality: Burmese Rohingya Organisation UK (BROUK) Challenges Allegations Against the Arakan Army

In a detailed rebuttal published this week, advocacy group BROUK issues a forceful critique of what it describes as a “fabricated” report targeting the Arakan Army (AA). The document accuses the AA of war crimes and human‐rights abuses in Myanmar’s Rakhine State — allegations which BROUK now claims to be misrepresented, misleading and lacking credible support.

BROUK argues the report distorts the realities on the ground by:

  • Mis-characterising the motives and actions of the Arakan Army, painting a resistance force as a systematic perpetrator of ethnic repression.

  • Ignoring or undermining the broader context of the conflict in Rakhine State — including the role of the Tatmadaw, the impact of long-standing ethnic tensions and the displacement of communities.

  • Presenting unverified or single-source claims as incontrovertible findings, rather than acknowledging methodological limitations or conflicting evidence.

BROUK is calling for a more balanced and nuanced investigation that takes into account the multiple actors operating in Rakhine and is urging international observers to scrutinise certain sources and verification procedures.

The debate highlights the intense contest over narratives in Myanmar’s historic and ongoing conflict, where competing organisations, armed groups and advocacy actors vie to frame the story of who is responsible, who is victimised, and what path forward is credible.
