Militants Cross from Bangladesh to Launch Surprise Attacks on AA Border Posts in Maungdaw
Joint Islamist militant groups operating from the Bangladesh side of the border carried out coordinated surprise attacks on Arakan Army (AA) border security posts in northern Maungdaw Township, according to local sources and an official statement released by the United League of Arakan/Arakan Army (ULA/AA).
One of the attacks occurred at around 6:30 a.m. on December 13 at an AA border outpost on Kyi Island. According to reports, members of armed groups including ARSA, ARA, and RIM infiltrated the area disguised as fishermen before launching a sudden armed ambush. Video footage of the attack, reportedly recorded by the attackers themselves, later circulated on social media platforms.
A local Muslim resident from Maungdaw said that the tactic of disguising militants as fishermen has increased risks for ordinary civilians who depend on fishing for their livelihoods.
“When extremist groups carry out attacks while pretending to be fishermen, civilians like us become objects of suspicion as well. It makes the security situation more complicated,” he said.
In a separate but related incident confirmed by the ULA/AA, approximately 10 armed militants crossed from Bangladesh and attacked an AA border security post located between Border Markers 20 and 21 in Upper Kyee Kyun Island, an area under AA control. The attackers reportedly used small arms and 40 mm (M79) grenade launchers in the ambush.
AA forces returned fire, after which the militants retreated and fled back toward the Bangladesh side of the border, reportedly withdrawing near a Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) outpost. The ULA/AA released its statement on December 15.
The ULA/AA stated that armed groups such as ARSA, RSO, and other Islamist extremist organizations have repeatedly carried out cross-border attacks, including ambushes on border posts, attacks on civilians, killings, kidnappings, and extortion in border areas. The statement further alleged that willful negligence by certain Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) commanders has enabled militant activities and undermined border stability.
The ULA/AA warned that continued cross-border militant operations are eroding trust-building efforts along the Arakan–Bangladesh border and could lead to serious consequences if the situation is not addressed. Authorities have urged heightened vigilance and caution for travel and movement throughout Maungdaw Township and nearby border areas amid ongoing security concerns.
